A Trusted Partner to
Families with Complex Wealth
Xception Family Office was established to serve select families that have amassed substantial wealth but not enough to effectively amortize the cost of setting up and maintaining their own family office. We’re not guided by sales or asset gathering goals, allowing us to work with a limited number of clients with quality and personalized attention.
Our Multi-Family
Office Services
Public Markets Investing
Led by forward looking capital market assumptions and modern portfolio theory, we help clients decide where to invest across the public markets. Rather than initially focus on individual securities, we emphasize thoughtful asset allocation and diversification across complementary sources of risk and return including, but not limited to, global equities, fixed income, and real assets like commodities and natural resources. We implement using low-cost passive vehicles where markets are efficient and engage active managers in markets where information is less known and where specialty managers can exploit pricing inefficiencies.
We manage all portfolios considering after-tax returns and opportunistically harvest capital losses throughout the year. Portfolios are continuously monitored and rebalanced as markets change and as a family’s circumstances evolve. The public market portion of the portfolio is often paired with private investments to balance growth, income, and risk management over full market cycles, taking into account a family’s objectives, liquidity needs, and broader balance sheet.
Private Investment Opportunities
We utilize a disciplined multi-stage process to source, evaluate, and track alternative investments including hedge fund, private equity, and private credit. We believe families can enhance portfolio diversification and optimize risk adjusted returns by incorporating alternative assets that exhibit lower correlation and differing return patterns to traditional assets like equities and fixed income.
Private investments are sourced through a combination of established relationships with fund managers and sponsors, institutional platforms, research networks, and direct outreach to managers that exhibit niche expertise and differentiated strategies.
Pre-Transaction and Exit Planning
We assist families and business owners with pre-transaction and exit planning to help ensure liquidity events align with broader wealth, tax, and legacy objectives. Our role is to provide a comprehensive financial framework that allows clients to evaluate potential outcomes well in advance of a transaction.
This includes modeling after-tax proceeds, assessing liquidity and reinvesting needs, and analyzing the impact of various exit structures on family balance sheets, estate plans, and philanthropic goals. We quarterback and coordinate closely with legal, investment bankers, and tax advisors to support informed decision-making throughout the entire process of an exit.
Estate Planning and Wealth Transfer Strategies
We work with families to support thoughtful, long-term estate planning that reflects both financial objectives and family priorities. Our role is to help clients evaluate how assets are owned, controlled, and transferred across generations, and to understand the financial implications of various planning strategies.
We provide analysis and coordination around wealth transfer strategies, liquidity planning, and tax considerations, and we collaborate closely with estate planning attorneys. This type of blueprinting and integration helps ensure estate plans remain aligned with family goals, evolving circumstances, and multi-generational considerations.
Cash Flow Planning
Since our families have substantial wealth, cash flow planning is less about budgeting and avoiding shortfalls and more about making informed balance sheet decisions that involve capital allocation and a family’s legacy.
We generate sophisticated cash flow models that contemplate inflows, spending, investment distributions, and liquidity events to help evaluate the timing and scale of gifting, trust funding, charitable contributions, and investment allocations, while maintaining appropriate liquidity across entities and generations. Our families find the approach provides clarity and flexibility as they make complex, long-term decisions.
Financing Solutions and Credit Strategy
We work closely with banks, custodians, and non-traditional lenders to help families evaluate and implement tailored credit solutions that support broader liquidity and balance sheet objectives. Not being a lender ourselves allows for an independent perspective on which financing structure fits best within a family’s overall financial framework.
Solutions often considered are collateralized lines of credit, aircraft loans, commercial debt, and residential mortgages. We assist in analyzing credit needs, collateral considerations, cash flow implications, and advocate on your behalf with lenders to negotiate terms that provide flexibility and a disciplined use of leverage.
Charitable Planning Strategies
We assist in developing charitable strategies that align philanthropic objectives with broader wealth, tax, and legacy considerations. We help families evaluate how and when charitable capital is deployed in a manner that is intentional, effective, and sustainable.
Our analysis and guidance involves the use of private foundations, donor advised funds, and charitable trusts, including tax efficient funding strategies, governance, and timing. Philanthropic planning is integrated into the overall financial framework while maintaining flexibility and long-term stewardship of capital.
Insurance Advisory
Within our multi-family office model, life insurance is evaluated as a strategic planning tool rather than a product solution. We audit current in-force insurance policies and assess coverage in the context of estate liquidity, wealth transfer objectives, asset protection structures, and overall balance sheet efficiency.
When appropriate, we provide independent analysis of policy design, carrier selection, and pricing to ensure alignment with long-term family objectives.
Family Governance and Education
Internally, families of significant wealth tend to face structural, relational, and developmental challenges around governance and next generation readiness. There is often a lack of shared understanding, unclear decision-making authority, generational gaps in perspective, communication challenges, and a struggle to balance individual autonomy with collective stewardship.
We guide families through these challenges and provide assistance in areas such as continuity and succession planning, annual multi-generational family meetings, financial education and development, and spousal and prenuptial considerations in order to foster informed participation, alignment, and long-term sustainability of capital. For families with a very complex dynamic, we may choose to bring in a strategic partner that specializes in these areas.
Property & Casualty Insurance Coordination
We coordinate with select property and casualty insurance brokers specializing in high end private client risk management. In partnership with vetted brokers, we help review coverage structures, valuations, and policy terms to ensure families are adequately insured, while simultaneously identifying opportunities to optimize premiums and deductibles.
Our objective and unbiased approach helps provide peace of mind that assets are protected appropriately without unnecessary complexity or cost. Annual meetings take place with the broker to update policies accordingly and shop across carriers if warranted.
Consolidated Performance Reporting and Portal
We provide consolidated and aggregated performance reporting across a family’s full balance sheet, regardless of where assets are custodied. Our reporting is designed to give a family clear and consistent view of portfolio performance across accounts, entities, asset classes, and strategies.
Performance is evaluated using industry accepted benchmarks at both the portfolio and manager level, allowing for meaningful assessment of results and risk over time. We also incorporate alternative investments into reporting, including private equity, private credit, and real assets, with the tracking of capital calls, distributions, and capital account balances.
Our Clients
Our multi-family office is designed to serve a limited number of families whose financial lives have reached a level of scale and structural complexity that requires integrated oversight. Their balance sheets often include operating companies, private equity and direct investments, real estate partnerships, concentrated public positions, trusts, and philanthropic vehicles. Many are navigating significant liquidity events or stewarding wealth created over decades. At this level, wealth is not simply a portfolio but rather a coordinated system of entities, obligations, opportunities, and long-term responsibilities.
The primary challenge is rarely access to investments. It is fragmentation, uncoordinated decisions across advisors, structures that no longer reflect a family’s objectives, or capital deployed without a comprehensive understanding of balance sheet exposure. Many of our families are focused not only on growth but also on continuity. They often want to educate and prepare the next generation while preserving flexibility across changing circumstances. Our clients seek institutional asset management but also require someone that can lead a team of specialists including estate planning counsel, tax advisors, and investment bankers and rigorously integrate investment strategy with tax awareness, estate architecture, liquidity planning, and intergenerational considerations. Our service model is most suited for families who require a higher level of coordination, discretion, and long-term stewardship.
